RHW Chimney, Paddington
Once the working chimney of the Royal Hospital for Women, this 40-metre brick landmark now stands as a heritage feature within the hospital’s adaptive reuse as residential apartments, serving the more modest role of ventilating the basement carpark.
Ironbridge undertook a comprehensive inspection of the chimney, both internally and externally, accessing the structure by rope after the original ladder system was removed. Our engineers provided a detailed structural assessment, including sensitivity to earthquake and wind loads, and delivered practical recommendations for remedial works and strengthening options to ensure its long-term stability.
The project highlights Ironbridge’s unique capability to combine heritage conservation, specialist access, and advanced engineering analysis, helping to preserve an important architectural gem within Sydney’s built environment.
