Westfield Signs, Sydney Tower

The Westfield signs atop Sydney Tower are among the most recognisable pieces of signage in Australia, installed in a spectacular helicopter lift operation in 2011. Each sign, with its distinctive 6-metre-high lettering, was lifted into position high above the city, demanding precision engineering to achieve both accuracy and long-term stability.

With structural design originally by Ironbridge Managing Director, John Butterworth during his tenure as a junior engineer, Ironbridge is now responsible for the ongoing maintenance and safety of the sign. Our engineers perform annual inspections and structural checks, accessing the installation via rope access in Sydney’s highest abseil. This involves traversing the exterior of the tower and carefully working across the signage face, inspecting anchors, welds, coatings, and connections to confirm ongoing performance and safety in Sydney’s most extreme wind and weather conditions.

Through this combination of original design involvement and ongoing stewardship, Ironbridge ensures that the Westfield sign remains a safe, resilient, and iconic part of Sydney’s built environment.
