Barangaroo Pier Pavilion

The Barangaroo Pier Pavilion is a sculptural waterfront landmark that celebrates its setting through the elements of land, sea, and sky. Land is expressed as a democratic gathering space sheltered beneath a curved canopy, its form echoing the natural coves of Sydney Harbour. Sea is embedded in the pavilion’s materiality — Sydney rock oysters mixed with white concrete, honed to reveal the shell and create a luminous, textured finish. Sky is drawn into the experience through a large circular oculus, puncturing the canopy to frame the heavens above.

Ironbridge was responsible for the facade design of this complex structure. With the pavilion open on all sides and at the roof, every surface had to function as a facade. Our team delivered a novel design methodology that adapted seamlessly to the pavilion’s unique, non-linear geometry, ensuring that plumb, flat, square, and curved finishes could be achieved with precision.

The result is a highly refined yet expressive structure, where architectural narrative and engineering innovation combine to create a pavilion that is at once technically exacting, materially rich, and poetically tied to its site.
