Thaw
THAW is an arresting, durational art installation and performance by Legs On The Wall, where a solitary performer is suspended atop a sculpturally melting iceberg. This vast 2.7-tonne block of ice hovers some 20 metres above the waters of Sydney Harbour, creating a powerful metaphor for climate change, human fragility, and the urgency of collective action.
Ironbridge provided engineering expertise for the project, delivering structural design, crane loading plans, and height‑safety consultancy that enabled this stunning spectacle to become a safe and seamlessly executed reality.
Originally premiering in Sydney in January 2022 as part of the Sydney Festival at the foot of the Opera House, THAW has since travelled internationally, inspiring audiences in:
Cataract Gorge (MONA FOMA), Tasmania
Nelson Arts Festival in Whakatū (Nelson), Aotearoa New Zealand
Greenwich+Docklands International Festival in London, UK
Zomer van Antwerpen in Antwerp, Belgium
Luminato Festival in Toronto, Canada
THAW transcends a visual marvel—it is a visceral, contemplative journey that dramatizes our pressing environmental moment, supported by extraordinary engineering ingenuity and performed in some of the world’s most evocative cultural settings.
